Impeller installation questions

I used to know this, but I have not been working on outboards for several years and I am now fixing one up. So, here are my questions about installing a new impeller.

I have a 2002 Mercury 150 I am about to replace the impeller on. My question is - When you put the impeller in the housing which way are the splines supposed to face or does it matter? Seems I remember they were to face towards clockwise but I cannot remember. Also, I know it needs to be lubricated. What is the best thing to use for lubricating?

Thanks.

The drivesahaft turns CW looking down, so the blades of th4 impeller will face CCW. Use some vasoline, soap or oil to lube 'em up.

Re: Impeller installation questions

Of course everybody has their own method. Some better than others. Mine is like this.

Since the driveshaft turns CW (looking down) take the impeller housing and coat the inside with any grease. I use 2-4-C grease. It really doesn't matter much. Just makes it easier to install. Then take the rubber impeller insert it into the housing (with housing upside down turn push and turn impeller CCW). Now simply slide the housing down onto the shaft making sure to line up the key.

Most important. Don't mess with the shifter or the shiftshaft and make sure the water tube slides in properly and turn flywheel CW a little to make the LU go back on.

Thanks for your response.

I thought it was alright, but I wanted to be sure. I would rather ask a dumb question than screw something up and have to redo it.:D
