impeller o-ring location

Any chance someone can tell me where this o-ring goes. I just replaced the whole waterpump but had no place to put this. I took it apart a few months ago so i have no idea where it came from.



i saw some videos online where some show it goes on top of the housing. doesn't really look right to me but please let me know if this is correct. thank you for your help in advance.

I should add this is a 1992 force 120 outboard.

I have seen them placed just as you have in the second photo. However. If you look inside the top of the plastic pump housing there should be a groove the size of that ring. If there is a groove, insert the ring there. If there is not a groove, leave it as you have it.

There is a grove on the upper cover but it doesn't fit very well, or is the shaft suppose to hold it in place ?

Out of my comfort zone now. Perhaps someone else can answer you. Perhaps the impeller hold it up in position since I notice that the stainless cup has a hole larger than the ring.

Last year I rebuilt a LU for a 90Hp Force 1991 and the rubberseal shall be as in second pic. I think it is for the drivershaft coupler to rest on.
It shall not be in the impellerhousing top as in the next shown pic.

2nd pic is right.
It was an item that was not on the original install.
Then Merc started putting their parts on the motors.
Most Mercs have the seal.

finally got around to it and it still doesnt look right to me. It doesnt touch anything like that, just sits there. It would just spin on the shaft and do absolutely nothing, i just took it to a local boat shop and they had no "techs" that can look at it because they dont work on force engines.

Someone please help, thats the only thing stopping me from taking this thing out on the lake.

If water is escaping along the shaft - and it is - the ring will throw the water out towards the perimeter, and it would not let to run it up along the shaft into the splines.
