Hello all: Have a 1996 Volvo 4.3 engine with a Jhonson belt driven impeller pump. The shaft seal is leaking. I pulled the pump and removed what was left of a neoprene seal with a small coil spring inside. My manual never mentions this. I hope someone can tell me if it is a Volvo item. there is a Volvo dealer about 60 miles from here. There is not a part # anywhere on the pump itself.
Will I be able to just buy a seal, or another pump?
Thanks as always. Dave-R

Just above your post, click on Volvo Penta Parts and follow the links to your engine. The seal is available, but about 99% of the time, the pump needs replaced when that seal goes bad.

13yrs is a good lifespan for a seawater pump-I would replace it. 'nutcase

I agree whith both posts above. If you had water leaking thru that seal, you wil need new bearings as well. And a press, and a puller for the pully, and possibly a shaft. See where this is going?

Update on pump seals: I could not find a parts # for just the seal. I went to the closest dealer (40 miles) and they said I would have to buy a new pump, as Volvo would not even list the seal . Went to the next dealer a mile up the road, and they had a sac of seals. The pump looked brand new and with the new seal installed, it does not leak or squeak. I can use the 350.00 . The pump bearings also were like new. Thanks as always Dave-R

A 68 impeller job is fairly simple. When you put it back together be sure the water tube gets installed in the correct place. That may be the only problem.

If you have the Lower end off, clamp a half inch water hose to the water tube that goes up to the power head. Ease on the water and see where it goes/comes out. If it doesn't look around for why it doesn't. ;)
