impeller question

im helping a frien work on a 1989 mercruiser 4.3 and im going to change the impeller does it need to be in gear or out of gear casue i know my 94 xri it s out of gear but some are diffrent

i have a 1989 sebring xl w/ a 4.3 mercruiser alpha 1. i changed mine in gear. worked fine. easy job. good luck!

With an alpha drive you definitly want the drive in forward gear to line up the shift levers wher they meet. Also, having the drive in gear allows you to turn the propshaft to line up the splines when reassembling.
