I have a 1997 Powerquest 454 Mag w/ a Bravo One Stern Drive. I guess Im a little confused on the water impeller placement......are there two different water impellers in the boat? One being at the bottom half of the stern drive, the other located at the base of the engine itself, inside the seawater pump. Is this true? I see the water impeller located here in this photo (http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/id21.html).

I also have a repair manual for the 454 Mag itself, which shows the water pump and impeller located near the fuel pump itself. I'm not sure which one needs replacing...I know one of them is bad for sure...engine overheats majorly....It would be of great help if you could clear this up for me. Thanks!

Scott Gibson
Detroit MI

Re: Impeller Question

A raw water cooled engine has the impeller in the lower unit of outdrive. Some freshwater cooled have a seawater pump and that is usually the only impeller for that application. If you have an incoming hose from the transom to a power steering cooler, take the hose off at the cooler and run the engine,if water comes through the hose than you have an impeller in the outdrive too.Usually you dont have both. Re: Impeller Question

There is another pump which on a car is called a water pump,on a boat it is called a circulator, this may need to be replaced. Charlie

Re: Impeller Question

Hey charlie.....In that photo above, I see the water impeller located in the lower unit of the outdrive. I'm almost positive I have the seawater pump, located at the bottom of my engine, by the fuel pump. Why does my boat need two water impellers? It also has the circulation pump at the front of the engine........

Re: Impeller Question

This may help...I have a '94 454 Mag that has two impellers...one in the lower unit and one in the seawater pump, which is located directly behind the fuel pump. I replaced the impeller in my seawater pump last year when the motor started running hot. It was a cheap and easy fix and best of all....it fixed my problem.

Re: Impeller Question

I'm pretty sure that a Bravo drive doesn't have an impeller in the foot, or lower unit. The raw water pump pulls the water up through the outdrive - the outdrive serves as a giant straw, so to speak.

Re: Impeller Question

The impellor on an Alpha 1 is in the lower outdrive. Is the impellor on the Bravo 3 on the engine? If so, it sounds like an impellor on a Bravo 3 would be much easier to replace.

Re: Impeller Question

Not sure this question has been answered, but does a 454 Bravo One vintage 1992 have a raw water impeller in the foot?
