Impeller question

Hi folks, i pulled the impeller from its housing this morning and noticed that the cover was not flat inside, but looked like the impeller was running at a bit of an angle, so one half is grooved, replacing the. Cover and inpeller is no big deal, but when pulling the actual inpeller out i noticed that it sits more to one side than the other, its very close to side with the inlet and outlet pipes on. Is this normal or is this the cause of my grooved cover? Spinning the motor does not move the one sidedness (is that a word?) Lol. Gap always stays bigger on side away from pipes..

Thanks in advance for any help..

Darren

I would post pics, but pgone makes them waaay too big.. this is all on a 350 chevy motor. Impeller housing on nose of crankshaft..

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... If the impeller were centered, it wouldn't pump water,.....

The squished side has a "cam" that flexes and makes the impeller pull water and then expel the water.
The cams do wear out and can be replaced.

IF?? the cover is too worn it won't be air tight and won't pump water.
The covers can be flipped on some pumps.
If?? you can blow through the pump it's not gonna work right.

Remove the impeller and turn the shaft.
If there is any wobble? Rebuild or replace.

Reinstall with a bit of grease on the vanes.

What is your full model number? Once you figure it out, put it in your signature so you don't have to post it again when you have future questions.

I will try, but info on boat is scarce... nothing is original,

Probably the bearing (bronze sleeve) in the cover or 'other' end is word egg shaped; allowing the impeller to tilt.
The grooves in the cover, if too deep, will prevent the pump from getting suction.

When i ran motor on muffs (although only.for about 2 seconds on starting fluid as i am.going through all systems including replacing bad fuel pump) water did not come out-of the exhaust port of outdrive but rather a small elbow hose at base of bracket for outdrive and slung rusty water onto trailer and back of boat.. this is why i pulled the impeller thinking it was bad.

There is an elbow at the top of the drive that corrodes completely though. You may want to replace that.

Also, there is a hole in the nosecone of the drive. You need to put a rubber stopper in there when you are on muffs or it will suck air through there.
