Impeller question.

today I replaced the impeller on my Mercury 75HP 1984 Model. When I did the drive shaft was very tough to turn. I put it on the engine anyway. Tried to start the engine and it would turnover and cranked for a second but knocked off and I tried to start again and it would turn but it was like something was holding it back. Could turning ten impeller the wrong way when installing cause a resistance like this?
