Ok I just bought a Mercury 50hp I think its an 1982 by the serial 6148789. Turned the key and it turn over and I tried to start it about 10 times then the starter quit working. I gave it a little shot of starting fluid and pull started it with muffs on and it seemed to run fine but I shut it down because It wasn't peeing.

After testing for power through the solenoid and to the starter I still had 12.9v at the starter with the key turned. I ordered a starter.

Now for the water. My muffs did not seal well but I figure I should see some water flow. So I may take it to the lake and start it and see if the water will flow. BUT if I have to replace the impeller can someone point me to a page or video on how to do it on this engine?

Thank you,
Ron

You can search on youtube and find a guy that has videos showing it on a merc, but it won't be the exact same engine.

best bet is to pick up a manual. It isn't a tough job if you are even slightly mechanically inclined.

I just did mine. Here are the steps as I remember them.

Put motor in forward gear

Put motor in full up position and lock in place

Remove the 4 visible bolts/nuts on the lower unit. Don't take the two nuts on boat side off completely, leave a few threads undone.

Remove the little plastic plug on the top of the lower unit, propeller side of the motor. Down in that hole there is another bolt. Undo that one and the round plate on the bottom side will come loose. Look up in there and you will see the last bolt holding the lower unit to the rest of the motor.

Give the lower unit a good yank. It should pop loose and rest on the nuts (not yours) that you left on by a couple of threads. Once you get it this far take the nuts off and slide the lower unit out. There is going to be a long drive shaft and a shorter shift shaft. Be sure not to bend or bang these up.

Set the lower unit upright somewhere so you can work on it. I just balanced it against a barrel.

Look at the bottom of the drive shaft. There is a plastic housing with 4 bolts holding it down. remove these and take note of the order things are placed in there. this is where your impeller is. there is a plastic/rubber seal thing at the top of the drive shaft. save this so you can make sure you put the right sized on back on. my kit came with two sizes.

put the new parts back onto the drive shaft in the order they came off, use new gaskets (rubber, metal, rubber) and slide the water pump housing back onto the shaft. You may need to turn the shaft while sliding the housing over the impeller to get it to seat properly.

reassemble everything in reverse order. you may have to turn the drive shaft slightly when putting the lower unit back on the motor. also make sure your water pick up tube seats into the water pump housing properly and your shift shaft is inserted properly. three things need to line up before the lower unit will go back on.

I think that's it. It's not as bad as it looks on paper.

Make sure there is nothing blocking the the flow. Before I pulled my LU off I ran a close hanger through the pee hole and cleard it. It worked fine after that.

i agree with skip also when you started it with the muffs when the motor started did you notice the overflow of water decrease or did it stay the same, with muffs when you turn on the hose water is going to go every where, they direct the water in the housing they dont seal, if your impeller is pulling any water you will see a difference in the ammount of overflow when the engine is running.
