I have an '85 40hp Johnson outboard, and I want to replace the impeller. I have a Clymer Shop Manual, but I have a few questions.
1) Do I really need to pull the motor to get to the shift rod retaining screw?
2) Do I need to disconnect all linkages and electrical connections? It also mentions carbs, starter, flywheel, coils, etc.
3) Do I need to replace the power head-to-exhaust housing gasket? If so, I imagine I do need to completely remove the power head to install the new gasket.

Re: Impeller replacement.

I'm no expert, but I can answer your questions and point you in the right direction. The shift rod disconnect is located under the carb, so no you dont have to pull the powerhead. The only connections you should have to disconnect arre the shift rod and the water tube. It's probably a good idea to disconnect the negative battery lead just for safety, but dont mess with the carbs or the flywheel, unless you want to redo the link & sync. There is no need to remove the powerhead, the impeller is located between the gearcase and the lower end of the exhaust housing. I hope this helps, P
