Hello Rodbolt - Looking to replace the impeller on my '98 yammy 115 this weekend and wanted to see if i could get a complete list of parts/gaskets/sealants/misc. that will be needed to complete the job - just trying to avoid a second trip to get the forgotten part (closest Yammy dealer 40 miles one way). Does the Yamaha factory impeller kit include everything needed to complete the job? My engine is a 115 "Inshore" model with low-water p/u. Model B115TLRW - 66Y

*I've got a copy of instructions that you gave me printed and ready to roll - just wanted to double check the part list.

** One last Q ... do you recommend putting a torch on the bolts and heat them up/cool down before attempting removal to avoid snapping one off?

Thanks! - Spete!

Re: impeller replacement

hello
I never reccomend heat unless its nessasary. and then only if your smoke qualified. I did burn one off today. the kit comes with all you should need unless you have started the motor with no water to the pump. if you take it apart and your housing is melted, even a little bit. then you will need a housing as well. its hard to tell about fasteners. I have seen some that I would swear would never move and off they came and others that looked clean and shiny that snapped off. I dont see any "inshore" models so I am not positive of the differences. but I dont think lower unit bolts are one of them. post me back the instructions I posted. that way my aged brain can look them over and see if there are any updates.
leave off the heat until its nessasary if you can.
a good way to help is place the unit in the water for the 24 hours prior to removal so any corrosion is wet and slippery.
good luck and post those instructions. CRS is kicking me :) :)

Re: impeller replacement

Not sure how many years they made the Inshore or if they are even making it anymore? Will proceed without the heat - are you saying that all I need is the impeller itself ?

Here are the instructions you gave ... "for the water pump follow the service manual and remove all the bolts including the one under the trim tab. dont forget the speedo sender if used.
now with the unit secured in the upright position unbolt and remove the pump housing. if the insert cup came off with the housing remove it from the housing and reinstall it on the impeller by pusing it down while rotateing the shaft clockwise.. now is the interesting part. starting in 95 yammis used a retainer to hold the driveshaft up at idle and nuetral.
to remove the retainer I use 2 large screw drivers pressed between the sttel cap and the nylon clip. twist them as you pry. if it moves and stops you willhave to pull up on the shaft and tap the steel back down again. ok now the retainer assy is off remove the impeller and cup. on top of the impeller is 3 sttel rings 2 flat and 1 wavy. save theses and on reinstalling it goes flat wavy flat. I use a chisel and place the cutting edge at the top of the keey and tap downwards and drive the key out. then remove the plate and gasket. if the rubber dam at the back of the pump on the fwd edge of the exhaust cavity is corroding remove it and wire brush it or it can cause cooling problems by wedging the plate and gasket up slightly. ok now install the gasket and plate. now drive in the key with an aluminimum or brass drift then the impeller then the flat ring wavy ring and flat ring now the plastic then the steel cap. now pull up on the shaft while tapping down and locking the retainer. now put the small oring in the pump hsg then the insert. now grease up the large oring groove and install the large oring. now install the housing to the impeller while rotateing the shaft clockwise. now install the bolts and have a cool refreshing beverage. now install the unit making sure it and the shifter is still in nuetral. now bolt it all up and have another"

Thx - Spete

Re: impeller replacement

yep looks close to right. also if the dealer is that far away then go ahead and buy the steel collar and the retaining ring. both are less than 10 bucks. I had to cut one off today.
its rare that I have to cut them but it does happen.
No never just the impeller. buy the water pump repair kit.
good luck and keep posting

Re: impeller replacement

Any preference on lower gear case oil? I've been using the Yamaha stuff but wanted to see if there is a good equivilent out there. Also, how many times will you re-used the red fiber washer on the drain/fill plugs before replacing - dealer charges me $2 a pop and thought i might try and get more than one lube change or inspection before changing?

Re: impeller replacement

hello
one of the marinas I contact with uses lubri-matic GL-5 . thats what we use in all gearcases except volvo and mercs that require a special synthetic, if the washer dont get distorted from over tightening we can use them a few time. as long as they are not distorted. if the are distorted replace them.
good luck and keep posting
