how difficult and costly of a job is an impeller replacement. i dont know much about boat motors, but have a friend who knows about everything about car motors. how difficult of a job would this be for him. would it make more sense than taking it to a mechanic?

Re: impeller replacement

The cost of the impeller itself is not that much, between 35 and 45 dollars and it is not that hard of a job, especially if your friend is a mechanic. I do it myself all the time. Your best bet is to get a manual for your motor and it will show you how to do it very easily. The manual is usually one of my most valuable tools.

Re: impeller replacement

I do need to get the manual for my motor. The problem is that the motor is from around 1965 (18 HP Johnson Seahorse). Any suggestions on where to pick up a manual?

You should be able to get a Clymer's manual for that motor right here at iBoats. Click on Repair Manuals at the bottom of the page.

Re: impeller replacement

I've got the manual for my '94 Evinrude 200 V6 and decided to try putting in water pump kit myself for the first time.

Just undid the four bolts and slid the pump housing off the driveshaft, but the impeller seems stuck firmly in place. Book shows it's held in place with a cam? and you rotate it to seat when reinstalling.

Any hints for how to get impeller off? Is it just seized on the driveshaft? Anything I might hurt if I just go at it with a big channel pliers?

Re: impeller replacement

I just got my stuck impeller loose by using lisle tool for removing auto trim. Mine was stuck pretty darn well I just soaked with PB blast and pride up with fork under impeller and pivot point of tool against shift rod housing/bolt and kept rotating and prying and it finally broke free. No damage to ss plate under impeller. Might not be the way a pro does it but it worked.
