have a 74 short shaft 25hp evinrude. Started on third pull, but don't see any water coming out. Doesn't appear to have a pee hole at the power head like the newer ones. Has two holes half way up the shaft. Is this where the water is supposed to be pumping from?

Re: impeller?

Your motor has the spray type water outlet at the bottom of motor pan.

Should be evident as quick as it starts. Mabey 3 seconds. If no spray, stop motor and start checking hose.

You have no warning horn for over heat. Spray is your only indicator.

If your thermostat is working proprely their should be no water thru prop hub exaust for the first couple minutes.

After this time you should see water in the exaust thru prop hub.

If you see water imedientely thru prop hub your T-stat is stuck open.

Head temp should not be above 175 degres and not below 125 after sufficent warm up time.

You can get temp. melt sticks at auto. parts place.

Good luck!

On your engine, if it is a 74, the exhaust relief hole is about mid-way on the exhaust housing. That is where the water comes out, it should do this instantly on start up. A 74 does not have thru hub exhaust.
