i have a 2001 mercury 4-stroke 5-hp outboard.its just about 1yr old with only about 5 or 6 hrs on it. already the cooling water spray has become noticably weaker. can anyone tell me if this is a diy job? or should i give the dealership the 200 dollars it wants to fix it. any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: impeller

yes, i purchased the motor new from west marine. i phoned the cust. service # listed in my manual and was advised that impeller replacement should be part of normal maintenance once a year and therefore not covered by warranty.

Re: impeller

Water pump impellers are typically not covered by warranty, unless they fail almost immediately. They are a normal wear item, like brakes on a car.

Re: impeller

It's a DIY job if you have basic mechanical skills, tools, AND a manual. An impeller, with today's materials, should last much longer than 5-6 hours. Never run your motor without a constant source of cooling water or you'll toast your impeller in a matter of seconds.
Backlash

Jeff,

Impeller replacement/service on outboards is DEFINETELY considered maintenance-in anyones book.

The service MUST BE DONE.

If you are a DIY'er. It's not to bad. Buy the OEM manual from your dealer and give it a whirl. You will learn a lot about your engine in the process.

I would also suggest that you use OEM parts and KEEP the receipts.

Good luck. :)
