Motor was shooting water out of the exhaust port yesterday. Now it's not today this sucks I have a Johnson 40hp
40el75c I have a halls sportcenter down the road they want about $73 for the rebuild kit is it really that much. Tried searching here with no luck is there any place cheap to buy the kit from. Or should it take it apart to see what parts it really needs and just order them to save money. Or just replace everything.

Re: Impeller

If you get it all apart the best thing to do is install the complete kit. Less probs in the long run.

Re: Impeller

You could always drop the lower unit first and see if the other parts are OK. They usually are. Parts like the housing and base plate, etc. If that is the case you could just purchase the impeller (although they are in the $45 range all by themselves).

I would want to make sure that there is definitely no water flowing first. The two things I would check is if the motor was properly submerged in the water. If it was on your boat, I would say it was. The 2nd thing is, and I am not sure here, is on my 1975 9.9Hp, it takes about 15 seconds or so for the T-stat to open before I see a spray out the exhaust hole. If I put my hand under the hole, I can feel a mist right away but it does take a little time to visually see the water. Perhaps yours works the same way so did you give it 10 to 20 seconds before shutting it down. If I run on muffs I never get water out the exhaust hole and the motor is cooling just fine. I have no idea why that is, so I don't run on muffs anymore. I like to know, not hope, that it is cooling.

If you do drop the lower unit, I would replace the impeller anyways, even if it looks OK. Too much work to drop the lower unit and the impellers need to be changed every 5 years anyways.

Re: Impeller

If you know the part numbers for your engine, you can search the net and find a lot of places to buy impellors and housings and plates if they are even needed. I bought all my water pump repair parts (actually everything) off EBay for a faction of retail...

Re: Impeller

in ran the motor in a barrel full of water the day before and water was flowing good, then yesterday I didn't move anything from the day before I filled it again before I started it and nothing. I get water pretty much as soon as I start it. This motor is not equipped with a thermostat. Today I took the lower unit off and took a picture there was foamy tan substance on the shaft up at the splines where when pushed back up it engages the crank and some foamy tan substance down the shaft and on top of the cap of the impeller. image.jpg

What would cause this or is it normal
