where is the impeller? and is there any thing i need to know? 115 johnson v4 1986. taken thermostats out and they seem to be working in a bowl of boiling water. could there be anything else apart from the impeller that would cause over heating?

Re: impeller

There are a number of things that could cause heating but first the impellar is located in the interface between the lower and upper foot. Need to drop your motor foot and inspect the impellar and pump housting for wear and stiffness of the rubber ime. Typically everyone says you should change them out annually. If the impellar is cracked and with broken off pieces there may be a larger problem caused by running with a bad and crumbling impellar. They tell me that the pieces may migrate with the water flow into the cooling passages in the power block. Probably can flush some of the particles out but may have to do a complete teardown to gain access to the harder passages. So far I haven't experienced the break up of the impellar but suspicious that I may have the possibility of that now. Waiting on the manual to arrive this Moday before I go ahead and drop the foot. Hope it addresses this possibility and gives some recommendations. That's one thing that everyone recommends, get a good manual first before tearing into your motor. Unless you have a local boat dealer with them you can order off the Internet with about a week delivery. Not a super hard job to do the impeller and pump housing inspection and in all likelyhood that will be the problem,

Just remembered that when I bought my used party boat the motor was stored in the water. the slime and growth inside the water intake around the foot were restricting the small screed inlets. Had to be flushed real good and seemed to take care of the problem.

The more experienced guys probably have another dozen possibles but this Nueby is not there yet

Hope this helped give you somethings to think about. Good Luck!

Re: impeller

I'd say jayboy70 pretty well covered it. The manufacturers do suggest annual replacement, but every 3 to 5 years isn't at all unreasonable. Beyond that is pushing your luck. Besides wear, rubber deteriorates from age. If your 1986 had never been run, you'd still need an impeller.
