Re: Impellors

Well, The propeller is what you see on the foot of the motor. An impeller is the main part of your motor's water pump.
Your Rude has both. The lower unit has to be removed to access the impeller.

1981,

Yes your engine has both. The impeller is inside the "leg" of your engine. It's not too hard to access and service.

The impeller basically does the same thing as the water pump on your car. In this case it pumps the water from the lake or ocean up to the engine. It provides the force or water pressure to circualte the cooling water through the engine. Once the engine has been cooled the water dumps into the exhaust housing to cool the exhaust.

Typically, impellers are rubber and they are DEFINETELY a wear item that requires frequent service.

some motors (jet motors PWC,) use a stainless steel or aluminum impellor instead of a probellor, but it does not do stuff for water cooling (sometimes) :) little rubber ones inside the lower unit push water into the engine to cool it down.

And, both the impeller and the propeller are driven by the same shaft.

This shaft is connected to the crankshaft and runs whenever the motor does.

Not until you engage gear (it's done in the lower leg, just ahead of the propeller shaft), does the prop actally turn and make the boat move.
