Improving GPS reception on 597CI under windshield

Good day, I have a Hummingbird 597ci that is mounted on the dash. Several times we have gone hours to get GPs fix. With that said, I picked up an external GPS receiver but haven't opened it yet - concerned about ability to return if doesn't work. I'm wondering if this external will pick up the GPS better or if anyone knows of a better idea.

The ext receiver will be fine. Just mount it where it has an unobstructed view of the sky.

I guess my first question should have been should I have to add an external? It seems odd that a windshield would obstruct the receiver that much. Or should I be checking out the unit as it might be faulty?

I also think it's odd that the windshield is causing such a problem. Think of the millions of cheap Tom-Toms, etc. operating just fine inside cars. Can you temporarily move the unit so it isn't under the windshield to see if it makes a difference?

When I get back to the house I'm going to try removing it and seeing if I get reception away from under the windshield. If its still finicky Ill take it back and try a different unit and try to isolate the issue.

Re: Improving GPS reception on 597CI under windshield

As a follow up:

- External does not work with this model as even though the connection looks like it would work, the unit doesn't acknowledge the external.
- I borrowed a new unit for the 597CI with the dealer and realized it was in fact a problem with the unit.
- Dealer has 'loaned' me the new unit until he gets Hummingbird to do something or make a decision if they will do a swap or what.
- It makes sense that a windshield shouldn't be at fault here as many people use GPS units in cars, etc.

Cheers!

Thanks for the update. I hate it when people just leave us hanging. It will also be of interest to see what Humminbird does for you.
