The boat I am buying has an old Garmin GPS MAP182 non color chartplotter. There is no depth sounder assocaited with it. I was thinking of replacing it with the Garmin 541S which has the same dimensions as the 182 so it will fit in the same location. I was told that I could avoid drilling another hole in the hull by using a in hull transducer. I am only interested in reading depth and an rarely boat in waters greater than 60 feet (20 meters). Will a in hull transducer work in this setting? Are they as acurate as a thru hull transducer? Do they work OK while on plane? Is there only one transducer that works with this unit?
Thanks

Yes, a shot thru installation will work in that application. The accuracy will be dimenished but not enough to be concerned. Where talking inchs, not feet.

It will read on plane if installed in a location where you have "clean", undisturbed water flowing over the surface of the hull at all speeds.

Re: In hull transducer

Thanks. I just noticed in a similar post regarding a Hummingbird transducer that an inside hull placement will not work in a foam core hull or very thick hull. Does anyone know the type of hull SeaRay makes? I believe it is solid fiberglass layed down in sheets.

A thicker hull might actually improve performance.
