After getting this motor to fire up I can only keep it running by setting on fast or by keep pushing choke button. I dissasembled carb and cleaned but did not remove welch plug. Diagram I found shows an idle screw which looks like it regulates what is called an air tube. So my question is about the proper setting of this screw. Does turning it out richen fuel or lean it out? I beleive the original setting was about a half of turn out. Like I said it runs good at fast setting but dies when I try to slow it down. I am going to try again in a barrel because it emptied a 5 gallon bucket pretty fast. Any insight would be great. Thanks ron

This may help you:

Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home

Download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

This is great! I didn't expect help this fast! I think since there are signs of someone else being into this engine before makes me think that the synch is probably the key. I've been able to get this far with help I found here, like making an omc coil fit, with a file, hammer and orbital sander. I was close to giving up on my new hobby of old outboards, but now I am enthused again! Thanks Gerry!!!

Question for you---is your idle needle a short stubby one similar to the one shown as 1N in the preceeding manual? If it is, it works backwards from what most "normal" ones do. That is you screw it in to make it richer, normal is about 1/2 turn out. That is because it controls air, not fuel. The idle fuel is metered by the idle tube. That idle tube has mighty small holes in it, so make sure they are clear, but don't even think about enlarging them with drills and wires, etc.

F_R. yes it is short and stubby "needle" that is. So if it works backwards I should be able to lean it out by screwing it out. I used my tip cleaners thru those but not large enough to remove any material. just to make sure there was no blockage. Enlarging them? Did you read my post in the triumph motorcycle forums about how I reamed out my pilot jet and really screwed up things?
