In need of some knowledge...

I have a 15.5HP Briggs and Stratton IC mower engine (actually my neighbor's) and I'm refurbishing it to make it run again for him. I have one interesting question for those of you in the know. There is a very tiny (diameter anyways) spring that slides over the steel wire connection from the governor to the carb throttle lever. It attached at both ends, one at the governor and the other at the throttle lever end. Can anybody explain to me what that spring does? I've seriously searched the net and YouTube for the last two days 'til I'm literally tired looking for its operation. Not one article of what it is there for. The fact that it attaches at both end to the same place as the steel wire link does, makes no sense to me... It literally slides over the steel wire and attaches to the same locations as the steel wire connection. WHY?

If it is the spring I am thinking of its for adjusting the governor, one end goes to a horizontal plate thingy with multiple holes?

I'm trying to locate a picture or diagram of how this is used. It is about 4 or 5 inches long with about a 1/8" coil that slides over the actual connection from the governor arm to the carb throttle lever. This is on a 15.5HP Briggs and Stratton IC engine on a rider mower. It just makes no sense what it is there for...

That spring can be wound tighter or looser on the connecting linkage wire to keep the motor from surging...or what some people call hunting.

Cofe, thanks for the reply. But that leads me to another question now. How does winding it tighter solve a "hunting condition" if the hard linkage/wire that goes through this spring attaches to the exact same places on each end as the spring does? I know I'm not too bright, but I need further inof or explanation. I have searched every Briggs and Stratton site now for the past three days and not one mention about what this spring is for or how it works... Can you please explain further?

It acts as a shock absorber to take the play out of the linkage where it attaches to the throttle plate holes and the internal or vane governor. They aren't really supposed to be adjustable, but some guys play with shortening the tang to give a tighter feel in the linkage.

+1 ↑ It removes slack from the linkage

splat and windy5849, your both response seems to make the most sense to me anyway. I couldn't see any other thing it could possible do but remove any slack. But I searched for an answer and even dedicated Briggs and Stratton sites had no answers. Thanks for taking the time to reply. It does make sense and the only possibility there could be. I just needed somebody to verify it. I am presently reworking a rider lawn mower for my neighbor because he can't. He has had one of his lungs remove because of cancer and now experiencing breathing problems needing oxygen 24/7. So he literally can't do most anything now. So I'm volunteering my help do things for him and his wife. Thanks again, I truly appreciate your reply. :high5:
