OK, back again for more help.. This forum is the best thing to happen to boating since the invention of the oar!
..Anyway, I have decided to remove the "rats nest" that is my boat wiring..Uggh! What a mess! Lights work when they want to and there is a short somewhere in the charging system (I believe) causing the battery to discharge quickly. The positive wire going to the trim motor for example has been spliced several times, it is four different colors of wire!
I want to do it right and to "code". Replace it all from gauges to trim.. ALL of it! I would like to know where I could find a good wiring diagram. The boat is a '66 ,19' Fiberform. Engine is a (as I found out on here) 165 Mercruiser with a Merc 1 outdrive. The original harness going back to the plug on the engine is still in fair shape. The engine compartment is a mess, under the dash is a mess! It all has to go!
I have a SELOC manual with some vague diagrams. Also, while I am doing this, I figure now would be a good time to wire up a dual battery system. Any pointers/ suggestions on that would be appreciated. I have never wired one up before. I want to use an isolator but want to make sure both batteries will be maintained by the alternator. Does anybody know what the amperage output of these alternators are?
By trade, I am an aircraft mechanic so I want to wire up the accessories off the secondary battery, Lights, radios etc.. in the same fashion as an aircraft.. a buss bar, circuit breakers etc.. but first, I want to return the original wiring as it was, as it should be.
Thanks in advance!
