1st off, I just found this forum... I'm thrilled to find a site with so much info. I'm also a boat owner newbe, I'm restoring an early 80's Sylvan deep V with a broken Merc Thunderbolt. I actually know this boat's owner so it should be a good project when finished. If I can find the parts....

I have a 1977 Thunderbolt 50hp 4 cylinder, the seals were bad from the former owner and it froze and poped the prop. Does anyone know what years will fit this? I am hearing that any "Thunderbolt" lower unit or case will fit, do you agree? I have been looking at Ebay but noone seems to know if theirs will fit when I do find one.

This motor has the mid section, then a 3-4" spacer piece, then the lower unit, I'm being told that this is unusual??? The s/n shows the motor as always being a long shaft.

This lower unit also has long bolts sticking up because of the spacer. If I find a short shaft case or one with the short bolts, is it just a matter of transfering the longer bolts?

My lower unit guts are good, I really just need a case and i'll have some seals thrown in it while it's apart. Any suggestions other than Ebay?

I believe you need the lower unit case from either a merc 350, 400, 500 because in the book i have it has those motors seperate from others. The picture of it looks different to compared to other engines.

thunderbolt just refers to the ignition type doesn't really tell you much other than that because the thunderbolt ignition was put on all kinds of different size motor.

Mine is a Thunderbolt 500 (blue band), so I guess what you're saying is that any year lower unit from a 50 hp "500" would fit in that year range? I think that these were made from about '64 to '77 and I think that my '77 may have been the last year. Can you tell me what years your manual covers? The assumption would then be that that date range would all be the same part.
