Has anyone had experience using the iNavx software for Ipad or Iphone? How well does it work compared to fancy GPS systems you can install on your boat?

I have Navionics on my Droid Tablet. Love the price, but I haven't used it much. Latest update seems even a little better than your screenshots on the thread you linked ^^^

Can you keep those track marks live while underway? On my Garmin unit (stolen, Grrrrr) it laid down what they called breadcrumbs. I do a lot of night boating and I used to lay down tracks during the day, and then at night I knew that if I kept the boat inside the tracks I wouldn't hit anything. Well, I wouldn't hit anything like an island or a sandbar....

I actually only wound up using it a little bit last year QC. I know the lake I'm on most of the time pretty well, so I use it mostly when navigating at night. Plus the ole' Stringer konked out on me in August and I went into layup early.

I think there have been two updates since I popped those screen shots, so the screens are a little different now. It doesn't actively leave a track on screen while I'm moving, but it does show a directional line. The track is stored and can be imported as I did for some of those shots. It's not real sophisticated software, but where I am I really don't need more than a note as to where the islands and shallows are.

The only problem with iNavX is that it can't be used for Passage Planning. Most other iPad Apps can because they have decent distance and bearing rulers which stay on screen at any zoom factor, so that you can measure small or large vectors. iNavX has a distance and bearing ruler but it will not stay on screen if you zoom. This makes it useless for passage planning. To see the best iPad apps for Passage Planning, visit routelist.co.uk.
