Inboard Steering Problems

Hi folks,

I went to power up the boat last weekend, and I felt something tugging the steering to the right, and it was making a cluck clunk type of noise. Almost sounded like banging on the hull up near the helm. I drove back to port real slow, and throttled up right before the 5mph buoy, it seemed like the problem was gone so I was thinking maybe I had a lobster buoy or something around the rudder.

I took it out for a ride the other night and again at a certain speed it started making that ratchity clanky noise and seemed to be pulling to the right again. I’ll be looking at the steering system Saturday morning, it’s a 25' 1982 Grady White Wahoo with a straight inboard, kind of uncommon, but I’m going to assume it’s hydraulic steering and look for a box/reservoir to fill. Is there a common fluid I can pick up that works for most hydraulic systems?

Anyone think of anything else that could be doing this? I’ll be lifting the instrument panel to see what the steering system looks like and if anything’s “loose”.

Also, the boat has an autopilot, it doesn’t work, need to find out why there’s no power to it. It’s a Raymarine Sportpilot. This could be suspect but I think the problem sounds a little further from the helm.

I know I’m not giving y’all much to go on here (it’s still a new boat to me as well) but figured I’d start a post and update it Monday, and who knows, maybe get some info from you guys tonight….

Thanks for reading,

Re: Inboard Steering Problems

I'll bet it has nothing to do with the helm or steering..

I'd be hauling that boat out, and giving the running gear the once over..

Maybe just a loose zinc or something else thats simple, but better safe than sorry..

Check the engine alignment too...
