Inboard water pump

I've been told that you can use an automotive water pump. Is this true, I know that automotive electrical components cannot due to the explosion factor. I could use the ports from the automotive type pump to use on my water heater. Is this acceptable to the USCG? Thanx to all you mariners.

If the parts work mechanically, I would say you can use it, as long as you are talking about the internal water pump, if it is truly a inboard with fresh water cooling. If it is an inboard/outboard, that could be a different story. <br /><br />There is no danger of an explosion from cooling system parts.
