I have a 318 chrysler inboard. The distributors are points type. It has a Stripped out points screw, and the cam block is kinda rough. Probably need a new dist. I have found an electronic one.Do the older style electronic versions need an exterior module. This one has the center hex-like spining mechinism, and the little box to one side. Two wires come out of the housing. Both wires are connected inside. If this is good to go,do both wires go to the coil.Red positive and can't remember other color to negitive coil. Also there is not a timing tab.Are there any Shade-tree tricks to timing, besides using a timing light .Some one mentioned a vaccum gauge,Do you want the engine to acheive maximum vaccum possible at idle or is this not true. Thanks for any help.

Re: inboard

$$,
Sounds like you might have a distributor with a Pertronix ignitor kit in it. If so, there is no exterior module. I would suggest looking at the Pertronix website for info on wiring.
http://www.pertronix.com/

You'll also have to remove the ballast resister. If it isn't a Pertronix-equipped dist you may want to buy the Pertronix kit for your old dist. They're usually less than $100.

Don't time your engine with a vacuum gauge. You might be able to find timing tabs at an automotive high performance parts dealer that bolt to your engine.
