Increased tachometer reading

The tachometer reading on my Mercruiser 4.3 has dramatically increased for the same boat speed; almost overnight (3000 rpm to 4200). Engine doesn't appear to be louder but can't be sure.

The prop may have hit a sand bar while kids had boat out. Is it possible that blades have been bent to reduce pitch and this results in higher rpm. Any change is not obvious as all blades seem to be same.

If it is unlikely that this great a change in rpm could be due to prop damage, any ideas for troubleshooting gauge would be appreciated.

Maybe the selector switch on the back of the tach got moved from 6 cyl to 4 cyl/

Check the prop for damage. It may also have spun the hub and it begins to slip at anything above 3000 rpm.
