RIB is a composite material of resin reinforced with fibers. It possesses the strength of iron steel, the function of water and erosion resistant, the brightness of glass, the ability of producing in one piece. It is limited in hardness and wear resistance though. Its fineness is affected by the quality of resources, the skill level of workers, the factory conditions and the environment, to mention but a few. These factors result in great variation of products.
In comparison with wooden boats, the RIB inflatable boats require less maintenance. Yet, similar to all other materials, FRP does deteriorate. Even if an extra layer of coat is applied on the surface, daily rubbing and erosion would damage that 0.3 – 0.5mm layer. Therefore, some maintenance is needed to keep it looking good and being durable.
Besides regular inspection, RIBs’ maintenance as follows:
1. Avoid sharp and hard objects. RIB inflatable boats will be damaged by stones, concrete structures and metals. Some measures should be undertaken, such as installing wear-resisting metals and rubber to protect the row, both sides and floor.
2. Repair immediately. Check the boat regularly and repair instantly if the RIB inflatable boat is broken or peeled off.
3. Place the boat onshore, particularly in winter. Water may infiltrate through the tissue between fibers which may weaken the strength of RIB. Therefore, placing the boat aground and drying it could restore its strength and durability. After leaving water, wash and then place the boat indoor. If it is alfresco, cover it with a boat cover and ensure good ventilation. Furthermore, having some maintenance is even better.
4. Avoid stagnant water. If there is excess water, remove it. If there is acidic fluid, it must be cleaned by fresh water immediately and wipe to dry.
5. Avoid overexposure to the Sun. Dock the boat under the shadow. Prolonged exposure does no good to RIB while the colors will also fade away.
6. Clean frequently. The body as well as the floor should be clean frequently. Fuel stains can be removed by ordinary cleansers, but never cleaned by erosive solvent or metal scrubbers which may scrape the surface. For difficult stains, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, toluene, xylene, styrene as well as acetone may be applied. Wash it after right lest the chemicals may infiltrate. Soft PVC spatula may be employed. Other soft materials, for instance gauze, soft towels and soft foam, may help.
7. Remove salt crystals instantly. Remove salt crystals on boat surface since they concentrate the sunlight and deteriorate the RIB layer.
8. Polish regularly. To stay the surface bright and protected, the boat should be polished regularly. Car wax or Fiberglass wax is applied to form 2-3 layers. Wait 2 hours in between in order to let the wax layers getting in shape. A portable polisher may help the task.
9. Repainting keeps RIB inflatable boats eye-catching and durable. Paint gets dull and dark in 2-3 years, although new RIBs look awesome. Repainting is one of the ways to keep them vivid. Among many kinds of paint, polyurethane and epoxy paint is preferable. Before repainting, RIB inflatable boats should undergo cleaning, de-waxing, wiping with sandpaper and puttying with epoxy. Then they will be reborn.
