Mark, the Turbo1 on an engine mounted to the transom is hard to beat if the engine is raised to the correct level (maximize what you have).
I seen mention here on the forum of someone stating the Ballistic was the fastest all-around prop tested by Bass and Walleye boats...well, let me clear that up.
They tested about 8 4-BLADE props of different manufacture and ran them ALL at the same engine heigth. This was VERY MUCH a Biased test, as they Ran a Mazco in this test as well, and of the props tested, if the engine would have been raised to the point of max efficiency, the Mazco would have blown the doors off of everything in that test...Jon Mazar of Mazco was VERY pissed about that, but the end result showed the Ballistic had better numbers, when in reality, the ballistic just happen to fit the set-up at the point of that props max efficiency. That entire test needs to be thrown out the window...it proved zero.
That 4-blade Ballistic is not a bad prop with a bit of tweaking...the 3-blade, well...I've tried some serious tweaking on 2 of those, and there is very, very little gain. The 3-blade pulls hard when hooked up, but when you start to raise it, or trim it much, it vents much sooner than most SS props I've run.
The General Manager at Merc's Prop division tells me their test show the Ballistic to be in the top few props for speed in a given pitch for a very short period during a test-run...they say the prop vented easily on their testing as well.
I haven't seen one on any rig yet, including my own, that fell into even the top 5 for speed.
The fastest prop I've ran is the TXP and Turbo tells me it shouldn't really work that well on my style of boat, and that's why I continue to say "each boat is going to show different numbers/react differently to any given prop."
The Turbo1 happens to be a super design that can perform well in many different applications.
I'll tell ya another tail of a prop that is now no longer available, and that is the MWC EDGE II...This is the second fastest prop I've run, and it appears as a cross between a turbo II and an OMC Raker. It acted as though it was venting quite a bit and yet the speed continued to rise...why they quit building that one...who knows, but it is a good prop if you can find one.
