I was at an estate sale preview today and found a 1995 Boston Whaler Rage, 15' jet drive. As near as my research finds, it is powered by 115 HP Johnny/Rude, which shows 204.8 hours. It comes with a Bimini top and a nice galvanized trailer. There is no owners manual with the boat.

I went over it quite well and it looks like it was very well maintained. I have no experience with Whaler's, other than working on the ones powered by outboards and doing electronic installations on then, when I worked at a boat repair shop. I have never even ridden in one. :(

Can anyone give me any idea of how well these preform? such as top speed, etc.
The auction is at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, 1-26-05....in other words, tomorrow morning at 9:00.

There seemed to be very little interest is this Whaler at the preview, as most people go to this place of auction for antique's, Jewelry, cars and furniture. Hopefully nobody will really be interested in the boat, except me. :D

So, if anybody has experience with these, I really would appreciate some info, bad or good.

Thanks in advance..... ...Bob in Calif...

HeadHunt.........

Thank you for the quick reply. I found that the postings were about 50-50 pro and con.

One thing in my favor, is that a good friend of mine is a "pump" distributor and is very familar with jet boat outdrives, so I could get replacement parts at cost and have what ever labor needed, if need be, to replace the parts for a couple liters of Jack Daniels! :D

If there is little or no action on the boat and the price is really right, I will buy it just to turn it over for a few extra $$$$.

Thanks again... ...Bob in Calif...

Good Luck. The Hull Truth has good info on particular boats and I-Boats has a much better database on engines.

HeadHunt

JB..

Thank you for the site, but there wasn't anything I could find related to that model. I'll just go to the auction an take my chances.

I've bought over a half dozen cars from that particular auction place, which all have had under 20,000 miles on them an as low as 12,000.

This auction was held in the past by the Coroner's Office, but it was taken over by the Public Administrator's Office a few years ago.
Thus the reason for the low mileage on them, some being up to 20 yrs old.

I have done real well selling the ones I didn't want to keep and usually have sold the others to the first looker.

This is the reason I will be bidding on the Whaler. $ ;) $

Hey, buck$ are buck$......... :D

...Bob in Calif...

Go to CW and to a search of the forums for the Rage jet boats, there has been a lot of good discussion about them.

The 115hp's one are sospose to be the best ones, some has smaler engines .Almost everyone I've talked to who ever owned one didn't like it. People thing they are loud, underpowered, and there are all kinds if horror stories about how they suck stuff up in the jet drive and cause prolbems.

Don't spend to much if your looking to re-sell for profet, even on ebay they don't bring much money, I'd say that they are the least desirable whaler on the used market.

good luck, and be carefull

After auction update..........

I went to the auction this am, which was attended by only about 50 people. It was raining this am and quite hard at times, thus the low turn out.

The boat boat was lot # 7, out of over 600 lots on the auction block today.

The boat sold for exactly $5000.00, .......$2000 more that I wass willing to pay for it. I went with the nay's, from the great help I received on this board and from several related sites I was refered to.

There were several boxes of fishing gear that I was also interested in. The most of it was cr*p, but there were several nice reels included, which is where the actual value was. There were 20+ fishing pole's included, but they were not the greatest quality. I figured I would go $125.00 for the lot.........The lot sold for $425.00!!!!!

The auctioneer was smiling, while some people were saying, "oh my g*d."

You never know what goes thru peoples mind when they get caught up in a bidding frenzy.

Again thank's for the input and suggestions guy's.

...Bob in Calif...

One of the main issues with this boat ( which BW discontinued quickly) was slow to plane and it porpoised badly. We have sold a number of Rage owners Smart Tabs and they found that the boat performed much better.

nautiJohn..........

I found the same information on one of the sites I was advised to go to for information on this model of Whaler. When I read the same problem's you write about, I thought of "Smart Tabs" being the cure for the problems.

The one problem was with the auction personnel yesterday, was they wouldn't let anybody get in the boat to look in the engine area. We had to reach over to open the covering of the engine area and it was so dark inside, you couldn't see the bottom of the engine, etc. (the boat was in a warehouse and not well lit) From as much as I could see this am, looking into the engine area, there were a couple of items missing from the engine. I'm 6'2", but I could barely see in side the engine compartment.

I have two great boats, so I was only going to buy the boat for $pec. anyway.

..Bob in Calif...
