I am going to look at buying my first motor. I need to know what exactly to look for when im buying it.

I have 2 other motors but I've never bought one myself.

Motor: 1974 Johnson 6Hp

Seller says: pumps water well, basically mint running condition wants 275 obo.

I think it is a good deal from what the info on the forum I'm reading.

thanks in advance

Re: Info needed

have you heard it run, have you tried it on a boat, to make sure the clutch dog is not bad. a seller will tell you anything to get rid of his junk.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: Info needed

Thank you for the info but a little late on it but that is also my fault since i should of asked earlier but it looks basically new minus the tiny nicks and scratches, oh and the sun weathering on the cowling.

he started it in water, started on first pull after primed, he had brand new plugs in it.

but greatly appresiate the info .. i have read alot of your responces to various postings and you seem extremly knowledgable.

Good luck with your motor. Sounds like it is a gem. T.D. is what I call one of the "Top Guns" on this forum. Listen carefully to him. I really appreciate the time and effort he (and others) dedicate to helping us laymen with our problems. Great forum for sure. Rick.
