I was looking at buying a 100hp Evinrude. The compression on all 4 cyl. are 102#. This seems quite low to me, but they are all the same. The price is $500 for the motor with controls. I was wondering what the experts thought since I'v never owned an Evinrude.

That was a very good engine, if pretty thirsty.

102# is acceptable compression. The manual asks for over 100 and within 10%.

Year model is VERY important. Be sure the gearbox and shifter are 100% mechanical.

$500 is a bit high for a mechanical shift engine and waaay too much for hydraulic shifters.

My opinion Evinrude is one of the best boat motors made.If that was a cold test thats good cause when it heats up,compression will be greater as everthing expands and gets tighter.Just my opinion
