Can someone help me with a couple of questions? What company manufactures Force Outboards? Does the 70HP Force (particularly a 1992) have an Achilles Heel? Thanks.

Re: Info request for '92 70HP Force Outboard

They WERE manufactured by West Bend in the 60's till Chrysler bought them out, and produced them until bankruptcy in 1984.
Then US Marine bought them and made them until 1990, when Brunswick (parent company of Mercury Marine) bought them.

Brunswick made them thru 1999, then ceased production.

THe 70 hp was decent, being made from 1991-1995. It was easy to work on, only one carb. If its new to you, change out the water pump impeller. Also put a new diaphragm in the fuel pump, do a decarb on the powerhead. and make sure it is not running lean.

The ignition system was much improved from previous years.

It uses a Mercury prop, 10.5"+/- diameter, the same prop used on Mercury 40-50-60 hp motors for the last 30 years, so they are easy to come by.

I always used synthetic oil in the fuel to cut down on the smoking, and always used a little Seafoam in the fuel to keep it clean.

Now why was it that I sold mine? Hmmmm.

They did have a tendency to have the stators fail, but the replacements were much better. Mine never failed, sold the boat 2 years ago.

Also, some will tell you the reeds failed prematurely, but I never had that problem.

So welcome to iboats, and happy boating.

Thanks, Roscoe; you're a wealth of knowledge. I'm selling my '95 Spectrum 19 Pro Avenger w/ 115HP Mariner. I like this boat but need to go smaller. So I'm looking at this '92 BlueFin Spectrum with the 70HP Force from a private party. I'll take a shakedown cruise, look for water pumping, trolldown and see if I get any missing. I'm not a motorhead, but do you think a compression check would be adviseable? If so, any idea what I should expect?

Thanks again,
Chiguy

You should top out above 30 mph with that rig, closer to 36-38 mph if the tank is low and there isn't any extra weight in the boat.

If you aren't getting at least 30 mph, do the compression check.
Personally, I would do the check if you have the means to do it.
