I just purchased a 12hp Seaking Serial#65X620297,and Model #GG9016B. I would like to know what year it is,manufacturer, and what type of tank I will need! Motor seems solid and has good compression. What oil mix is advisable for this motor? Thank you for your help!

Ownsbud56

Re: Information on 12hp SeaKing

Your motor is a 56. Built by the Gale devision of OMC.If it is a full gearshift model it will share some parts with the similar Evinrude /Johnson 15 hp.Fuel mix is 1/2 pint per gallon of regular unleaded.Use tcw3 rated oil.
If it uses a remote tank check the fitting at the motor it will have 2 pins with a third pointed pin as a latch if it uses a twin hose tank.If it is a single hose tank it will have 2 pins a pointed latch pin and blunt fuel "pin"
Someone will no doubt be along with more info.

Re: Information on 12hp SeaKing

Thanks for the information Spike! The motor is the same age as I am! I never would have thought the fuel mix would be 16:1. The motor has an integral tank but also a newer style OMC hose hookup coming out from under the right side of the housing. Was this a conversion someone did, and can the integral tank still be used? Spark plug brand/number and gap would also be helpful, along with information on how to adjust the high and low speed seetings. Thank you for your time!
Ownsbud

Re: Information on 12hp SeaKing

In 1964 OMC redesignated all OMC-made outboards built before 1964 as 24:1 engines using TCW2 oil.

The original 16:1 oil mix for your Gale-made Sea King was to use SAE30.

So, I recommend a 24:1 mix using TCW3 Outboard oil. (1 Qt. TCW3 to 6 gal. 87 octane unleaded.)

Also, as Spike says, your engine originally used the OMC twin hose and pressurized fuel tank. A lot of those have been converted to use the modern single hose system by addition of a fuel pump. If the fuel hose fitting on the engine has one hose it has been converted.

Thank you for the information! Do you possibly know where I could obtain an operating manual or instructions? I don't know the proper procedure for setting the high and low speed adjustments on the motor. Do you have to reset them each time you run it? Thanks again!

Ownsbud

Those are the mixture controls. Joe Reeves has written an excellent explanation on how to set them. You can find it here:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=030558
Once they're set, you should be done with them pretty well forever. In cold weather I find myself richening the idle mix a bit to improve the idle.

You can get a manual for your Sea King from kencook.com, marineengine.com, theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com, or maxrules.com. I wouldn't bother with the operating manual, but the service manual is very helpful.

I'm pretty sure the 12hp takes a Champion J6C, gapped at .030" (EDIT: Got it confirmed. Original was J6J, the modern equivalent is the J6C)

Thanks to all for the advice and help, it is very much appreciated! I don't know if this motor really has much collector value, but I like it and plan on doing a lot of putting around with it! Thanks again to all!

Ownsbud

Re: Information on 12hp SeaKing

Paul,
The link for the mixture controls should be helpful! On the tank situation it looks like I can use a modern OMC tank. Would it still be possible to use the integral tank by opening the fuel valve on the side of the motor? I don't know if its still usable after a fuel pump was added to the motor. I thought it might be usable as a reserve or sometimes used on a different boat without the tank. Thanks!

Ownsbud56

If it's set up the way I imagine, using a OMC fuel tank quick connector and fuel pump, then I think you'll need a three-way fuel valve in place of the tank's petcock. It'll just dribble the contents of the tank out the quick connector with the remote tank disconnected if you just tee it in before or after the pump. I suppose you could make up a quick connector with a bit of plugged off line or add another shut off to the remote fuel line.

Easy to spot a fuel pump - just follow the fuel line from the remote tank connector. If it goes into anything other than the carburetor, that's your fuel pump.
