Hello, I am new to this site and I have some questions on a set of Volvo drives I saved from a 1988 Sun Runner 318 Classic that I scraped-out. Most that I can tell is that they are the AQ280 series and I want to advertise them for sale correct. Question: How do I fine the gear ratio, and if that have the power trim? I see the electric motor for the tilt! They also have the Volvo power steering system. One has a ripped rubber boot, but what is this setup worth complete?

More photos.

Any way of testing them?

They are standad 280 drives No TRIM,just tilt.
The test? Check/drain the oil and look for water, metal.
Inside the bellhousing, the drive shaft.Try to wiggle/move side to side.
Shouldn't move.
Probably came from a AQ225 or AQ260
The 4th pic has a lot of the transom.Does it still have the hull#? Look on the inside too.
Some manufacturers put it on the inside too.
Not sure there is a AQ285

The prop shaft ring anode must be removed.
The ratio will be stamped into the bearing carrier, and will be good if no one has changed the gear set, and forgot to re-stamp the carrier.
You'll likely need to wire brush the area to expose the numbers.

Ratios are;
2.15:1 for the 4 cylinder engines.
1.89:1 for the inline 6 and some of the 4.3's .... depending on hull size.
1.61:1 for the V-8's and some of the 4.3's .... depending on hull size.

Only the first three digits will be stamped into the carrier...... so a 1.61:1 will read 1.61 only.

Thanks for the information. They were the AQ225 V-8 engines that had cracked blocks in a larger cruiser model. They both have right handed props, so I guess they did not make a counter rotated drive in 88'?

The older VP outdrives could be easily switched to run right or left handed props.
