Hi, i noticed that my '89 3.0 mercruiser runs poorly initially from start up to running for 15-20 min.(usually stalls, sputters, inconsistent RPM's and so on) But after about a half hour or so, it starts to run fine..much smoother, no stalling..Anyone know why this happens? I just bought the boat about a month ago, so i really havent looked into it much.It only has 260 hours, but i'm assuming it sat for a long time. Anything specific i should look at?

Assuming you have a carb and the gas is not bad, sounds like a choke adjustment.

Noticed in your profile you are a student. Can I assume this is your first engine with a carburator. My guess all your cars have been EFI.
Carbs and chokes take a bit of getting used to.
Since it has sat for a long time, it probably needs a tuneup and some fresh gas, but it's still going need some getting used to.

hello
if your choke is electriclly heated and I suspect it may be. test the choke heater and voltage supply. if one or the other is missing it will cause the choke to take forever to unload.

I agree with all of the above, and would like to add the following: In the typical summer climate your engine should be up to temperature and choke released quicker than 1/2 an hour. Have you watched the temp. guage ? Is it up over 125 degrees(preferably 140-150) within 15 -20 minutes?
If not, the thermostat maybe stuck open or someone may have removed it.
