Question for our Merc I6 experts... I presently have a 90 hp I6, 1984 mounted on my boat. I want to swap motors and mount a 1979 115 hp I6. There is a problem though with the controls. The 1984 has the newer style shift commander with the warmup control as a square button located on the handle, and the 1979 has the older style shift commander with a warm up lever located on the top starboard side of the control. My question is simply this. Will the electrical plug from the 1984 controller properly mate with the 1979 engine? (At the engine itself) What I'm trying to do is avoid having to replace the controls when I replace the engine, and since they are both I6 engines, and both are CD type III ignition I'm hopeful that they are just a simple swap. Anyone know for sure? Many thanks for any replies.

Re: Inline 6 remote control question

it should. unplug the motors, not hard to do, on the inside surface there is a number, it is the part number. they should be the same. the see if the layout of the plongs is the same. they used the same harnesses for years and for every hp.
