Greettings ,I just picked up a 115 inline 6 .the compression is 145 on all holes and it runs like a raped ape,but the #2 sparkplug hole looks like it is driping water out of the spark plug hole. there is no water on the plug, and it is not burning clean as it would with a omc if the head gasket is bad . any ideas thanks RB

do a seach about leaking water jackets. its no worries yet. but if this is a satwater motor the odds of getting the cover bolts off are slim. dont compare the merc inline with the jonny/rudes. you will hurt your brain. the inline 6 merc has no cyl head
get a manual and start reading :)

Hi Rusty Bolts, beautiful engine my friend. The problem you mention is very common and isn't really a major issue. The leak you mention is coming from water cover plate gasket which, in my opinion is better left alone if you can. Its only one hole thats leaking, so clean the area and try to re-seal with some JB Weld or similar.

The other option is to strip the cover off and risk what im going through at the moment! No fun, I and many others will tell you.

Check this thread to see what kind of problems you may encounter - http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=014696

Stan........

Seal it from the outside. That's not a head.

-W

You forgot all the steps that deal with the likely broken cover bolts: Like pulling the powerhead, drills, helicoils, etc etc.

-W

PHmike

Clams is only giving Rusty the "Food for thought" on the likelyhood of broken bolts. Some posters have broken at least a few.
I went for the clean and JB and so far so good..

You are both very lucky and a statistical anomaly. Advise based on your *very* fortunate experience will send more than a few motors off to Allah where they will not collect 32 virgins or pass go for $200.

-W

Re: inline 6 water leaking by spark plug

http://www.jbweld.net/products.html
Take your pick.. I used the top one. There is a little trick though...
If the leak is close to the plug thread, every time you remove the plugs, you will disturb the seal, due the the tight fitting thread/washer. So I removed the plug washers an drilled them out a few thou bigger. When the JB dries, and you tighten the plugs, the washer gets squished into the repair and next time you remove the plugs, the washer stays.. hence no disturbance. Just make sure when you put new plugs in, discard the new washers. It looks nicer too...
