Inline Fuse

I just replaced a bilge pump and the manual suggested an inline fuse, there is a fuse box that the wiring runs though under the steering council. Its labelled ignition, navigation lights, bilge, etc.... Is the fuse box sufficient or do I need an inline fuse 12 to 18 inches from the pump like I have read on other things.

Also the old bilge pump did not have an inline fuse.

A single, easily accessible fuse is sufficient.
