Hi All,

A couple of weeks ago the engine started to turn over very slow when starter button pressed from cold (like a bad battery), but after leaving it for 2 mins between tries, it will start after 3-5 goes, on the go it starts the starter motor turns over the engine like it used to (fast) and it starts fine and will run all day long.

It now won't start, it just clicks sometimes or turn's the engine over very slowly for 2 seconds then stops even with finger on started button, BUT the wierd thing is that sometimes after 20-30 goes it turns the engine over fast as normal and the engine runs fine.

I Charged the battery, no luck, bought a new battery, no luck, when starter motor does catch it starts it like it used to and engine will run fine as long as i don't turn if off as it will still not restart even when hot.

What do you think it is?

Cheers
Ross

Either the Starter is about to Die,.........

Or,.. Possibly,....
The condition of the Wires leading from the Battery, To the Starter,......
Or, The Ground Wires........

I'm Betting it's the Starter on it's Last legs........

I was thinking the starter was dead, what changed my mind was that every 20-30 tries of it clicking or running slow, it jumps to life and starts the boat fine??

Sounds to me like you have some sticking brushes inside of the starter. There are usually four brushes, if one or two are not making contact all the time it will crank very slow and pull a ton of current.

I now think its the starter motor thats knackered, it is under the engine on the right hand side (when looking from back of boat) but there seems to be no easy way of getting it out? Anybody got any diagrams/pics of which bolts need removed for an 1991 Imar 5.7 v8

2, 3/8ths" Bolts,.....9/16ths" socket,....... Straight Up from the bottom,.....

Maybe a smaller bracket on the front edge of the starter motor.........
but there seems to be no easy way of getting it out?
Ayuh,.....................

On some boats,.. You need to remove most of the Interior,...... On Others,.... You Remove the Engine...............

Re: Inmar 5.7 v8 Starting Problem

I am now confused, went to the boat last night to take a look at how to get the starter motor out and while i was there i hit the starter button and it started right up, switched it off, started it again, did this 5-6 time over a half hour period and it worked perfectly every time, no clicking or slow turnover.

ross.

Re: Inmar 5.7 v8 Starting Problem

I wasn't just going to leave it, but I am wondering if there was mosture trapped somewhere that was shorting something (I has been raining for 2 weeks here) but maybe i'll never know. I am going to strip down all the wires and regrease / tighten etc.

(The most I get offshore is 50 meters as the boats is a wakeboard boat that is used in a freshwater river, so can paddle to the bank!!)
