The boat is 17' (1992) and has a 3.0/alpha one gen 2 outdrive.

What are some things I can check the condition on to make sure it won't leave me stranded on the lake (mainly a no start situation).

It's new to us so I don't have much trust yet in it. I'm currently in the middle of a trim/limit switch, bellows, gimbal bearing, and lower shift cable job. The outdrive is being serviced (new water impeller, new yoke and seal kit, new oil).
I replaced the negative terminal and still have to replace the positive.

My circuit breaker was tripping after a day of boating(the next day) I thought it was the starter relay before I found the circuit tripping. It hasn't popped since, I'm thinking it was an isolated incident with moisture getting something wet maybe?.

It has new plugs and I cleaned the flame arrestor.

Have you researched the "adults only" stickys at the top of this forum? You'll be busy reading for hours! Sounds like you are on the right track with the service to the OD. and the other items related to that end.

I just bought a 95 3.0LX and I did the same as you to the outdrive. Inside I have addressed a few issues inside:

Inspect cap and rotor. Replace plugs. Perform compression test.
Inspect battery wires. Had a burnt hot area on the neg wire just like you.
Replaced hose from bottom of fuel filter to carb
Replaced all three hoses and thermostat/gasket. Heater hose was soft from oil being on it.
Flushed out the outdrive oil fill container.
Replaced temp sensor to fix temp gauge.
Adjusted motor mount to align engine to drive shaft.
Replaced plastic water tube elbow at transom. It was dried out from age.
Replaced bad blower motor
Still to do: Check PVC, timing and then idle mixture.

That one I want to watch :D.... No PCV valve on these engines.
