Hi all

I recently replaced my o-ring and prop seals on the bearing carrier for my lower unit and now want to reassemble. It popped out easily enough when using a flywheel puller but have some questions about how to put it back together. I have installed two long bolts to guide the bearing carrier back into the lower unit but it seems that I can't get it all the way back in place where I can remove the long bolts and use the 4 short bolts with o-rings to fix it in place. Should it slide easily inplace or is some force required to get it back into position? Don't want to start pounding on it if I have something not lined up correctly.

All help is greatly appreciated

Powdery residue on the magnet is normal. If you were using a stainless steel prop, you could expect some tiny slivers which is also normal. Color of the lube depends on what was put in there. Mostly you don't want it to be black and tar-smelling, or milky which would indicate water getting past the seals. A slight metallic look wouldn't be unusual, but if there was a lot of metallic in the lube, it would be worth looking into. Sounds to me like you have nothing to worry about. That wouldn't necessarily be my first choice for a gearlube, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over using it, either. :)

The carrier may need a bit of tapping to get it to drop the rest of the way. But first give the driveshaft a spin. The reverse gear teeth may be hanging up on the pinion teeth.

Thanks for the reply. Took it out looked at, saw nothing, put it all the way back in with a few taps of the mallet this time. Maybe something was misaligned the first time around.
