Have recently bought a new 2002 Johnson 4 stroke outboard. I need to mount it on a 1986 Sea Nymph 171 ski/sport bow rider. I need to know how to set the motor on the transom and how to adjust/set it up properly. What do I fill the old holes with? Which lift eye do I use to hoist the motor? I will be purchasing new controls for the boat. The old motor was a 50 horse force and is no longer on the boat. Will Be installing new gauges, controls etc... Should I mount the motor first an then buy the controls and cables to make sure of cable/harness length or should I just estimate and buy them before installation? Where can I find this information?

rmyer,

There is too much involved to describe here. If you've never done it before, you'll need a manual.

Most outboards have a seperate installation manual. Any dealer, of your brand, can sell you one.

Hint: Don't ask them to copy it for you and give you the info. free. That would be an insult.

To try to, answer here I go.

1. The mounting holes may be the same, unless your Force had screw clamps.

2. Mount so that the cavitation plate is even to about 1/2" above the keel of the boat.

3. Mount the engine and controls first, then carefully measure for cables. The wiring harness should be plenty long.
Wherever you buy the cables from will provide specific measuring info.

4. The guages may be unique to that engine. Non OEM brands such as Teleflex, Faria, etc. all have instructions with them and tech. question hotlines.

Re: installation of new outboard

Asked dealer about installation manual and they couldn't find an installation manual available for the 2002 4 stroke. Where can I get information on installing this motor? I am ready to install it but want to make sure how to lift the motor. I know there is a lift ring but want to make sure it can be used for hoisting this heavy motor. Also need template to drill holes for mounting motor on transom. Other than that I have literature for controls and cables and am ready to go.
