You all are going to love this one. Ok I purchased an old 1970 Stinger quite a few years ago with a dead 4 banger in it. I got the bright idea of installing a Honda Goldwing motor in place of the dead 4 banger. The conversion was pretty simple, only requiring a minor amount of modification to the lower deck and engine cover. The Goldwing by design has a transmission and I can select the gears to suit my needs. I dont know the gear rations, however i do know that 1st gear is super low, second gear is moderate and third gear seems to be the best all around gear for getting around the lake with a top speed of about 34 MPH. The fuel economy is out of this world. So, here are my questions. This weekend I was on the lake and my boat decided that it was not going to engage into forward drive. I tore apart all the linkage and tried to manually engage the drive to at least get back in. After a few hours of only hearing the drive clicking and trying to engage without any success, I discovered that if I brought the motor all the way up I could with great difficulty get the drive to engage (I don’t know anything about outdrives.) I thought that as long as I did not disengage the outdrive that I would be fine. However after turning the motor off to fish in the marsh, I discovered that the outdrive was not engaged again. After about another hour of trying to force it back into gear. I managed to get it to engage once again. Why did it disengage when I turned the motor off and how do I fix this problem. The outdrive easily engages into reverse and I tried without any success to adjust the linkage. It was obvious that when I was trying to engage the outdrive that the cable was in all the way.

Thank you for any help that you could provide me on this. For my second question, assuming that i can correct my first problem, I would like to know what is the best pitch for my prop I should use with my very unique 5 speed Motorcycle motor install. The goldwing currently runs at about 78 to 81 horses and 3rd gear is the tallest gear it will push.

Thank you again.

Tracy

Like I have nothing better to do than post, as you say "B--- S---", on a boating Forum. PLEASE! Either help out or Sail Off! Thanks to the rest of you. I could post pictures if it would be helpful, although I am not sure how to do that.

I would love to see a pic of this. Sounds like a new installment of 'Junkyard Boats'.

I have great admiration for those who can think out of the box like this and actually make it work. My only concern is that fact that the goldwing motor does not have marine grade electrical components to suppress sparks in the bilge. I wouldn't run it with the doghouse on for that reason.

I would like to know what is the best pitch for my prop, and 3rd gear is the tallest gear it will push.
And, you'll be needing Alot less pitch.........
You'll want to be able to pull Max RPMs at WOT in whichever gear on the Goldwing is Direct (1/1)....
I would Guess that it's 4th or 5th.....

Re: installed a Honda Goldwing in place of the 4 banger

Gear ratio depends on what year and model goldwing he got his engine from.

I am assuming for lack of anything else that he has a GL1200 4 cylinder motor.

These have a 4th gear of 1:1.

On the other hand, if he has a 6 cylinder, he would have much higher gear ratios.

If he has a GL1500 then his 3rd gear is slightly low (1.272:1), while his 4th gear is very slightly overdrive (.964:1) and his 5th is more so at (.758:1)

If he has a newer 1800 then his third gear is almost 1:1 (1.068) while his 4th is overdrive (.843:1) and his fith gear is almost double overdrive (.686:1).

The 1500 has its peak horsepower (83ish) come in at about 5300 rpm, with peak torque (about 92 foot pounds) hitting at 4400.

The 1800 has closer to 100 ponies under it at about 5500 rpm, while pushing 108 foot pounds of torque at 4500 rpm.

I cannot remember at the moment the proper rpm range for the 1200s or older, but being older four bangers you'd have to guess that they were running at about 65-70 hp at about 5200 rpm.

I am curious as to how his clutch basket is holding up under the increased load.

And, who made the exhaust system?

Waiting pics with much anticipation.

OK, sorry for the hiatus, I will post pictures tomorrow. I thought it was an 1100 but i guess it could be a 1200( i cant remember now), early 80's model. The exhaust is hand made and ports into the existing exhaust port of the outdrive. the water intake is also apart of the outdrive and is routed up tight against the exhaust to heat the water before it reaches the motor. My understanding is that the motor puts out about 79-81 ponies

Re: installed a Honda Goldwing in place of the 4 banger

I have put a 185 cid Merc 300 V6 in my Yamaha V-Max. It runs th 1/4 in 2.6 seconds but my grandmother was sitting on it and died. We didnt know this happened and she sit on it dead for a month. I can't the smell off the seat. :D The Carnival Jubilee has twin 13000 HP engines. If I could attach this to my old Tahiti Jetboat I could run 1000 maybe. Lets see Carnival push this Cruise Ship with a 455 Olds jet....get real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
