Hey guys,

Installed new Gimbal Bearing.. Marked the hole and hit the bearing in with 3" PVC tubing. I got the bearing in and square, but the Zerk pumps the grease towards the engine side of the bearing. I'm sure the hole isnt aligned with the zerk. :(

Brand new bearing.. I am under a time crunch to get this engine back in and plan on doing tomorrow morning around 7am before it gets to be 100 degrees out. Can I get the engine in, and align the motor and put things back together. How long will this brand new bearing last without new grease? Can I go a month or two before taking it back out and putting it back in? I dont have a slide hammer and I took the old one out by beating it out from the inside. Hate to do that to a new bearing.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

That happens, just turn the bearing by hand a little bit, give the pump a stroke or two, repeat as needed. If the bearing gets tight, the grease is going into the bearing. As you fill and turn, you will see the grease start coming from the inside of the bearing.

How long will this brand new bearing last without new grease?

Not very long, maybe the trip.

You take it out, it's dead and will need to be replaced.

Is the bearing in all the way? I haven't had any push the grease inside like that.

It's very very close to the ridge in front of the seal. If the outter part of the bearing (the holder with the ridges) doesnt have it's grease hole lined up with the Zerk.. Do I just grease the face of the bearing while turning it? Guess I don't understand all the components of this thing. If I'm pumping the Zerk and it's hitting a solid flat surface on the outer holder ring.. It would just squirt out like its doing.

Sierra bearing.

Thanks guys,

Joe

You reach in through the bellows and stick your fingers in the bearing and turn the inner race.

bearing.jpgDon, I attached the pic of the new bearing. You can see where the transom hole is not aligned with the bearing opening. You can also see the grease coming out the back. How do I turn the outter part of the bearing when its snug inside the transom? I am thinking the notches should be straight up and down?

Thanks,

Joe

Since you have the bearing in that way,you can tip it on it's side and take it out through them slot's you see there. Then pull the outer housing and install it correctly. I always install them so the slots are on the inside. And I mark with a sharpie where the grease hole is just to help line it up.

Grub,

What's the best way to get the bearing sideways? Tap it on the face to one side? Not sure I can do the socket trick because I still have the bellows on and it limits leverage.

Thanks,

Joe

You can use a small punch and tap it on the outer race to get it flipped sideways. Just be carefull not to hit the seal on the bearing, or use a long skinny pry bar to tap it with. Take your time and it'll go! After the bearing is out you will have to make a puller for your slide hammer or use the threaded rod trick to get the outer carrier out. Good luck!

You can't remove the outer race if you remove the inner portion. If you try to use the slide hammer on the aluminum outer race you will cave in the edges and not be able to put the bearing back in.
As I said before, if you pull the bearing out, you have to replace it because you will damage it.

So what's my option to grease this? Remove it (inner race).. Grease manually and reinstall? I don't care if the zerk works now.. If I can grease it, It will be good for a while?

yeah you can take the bearing out and grease it. itll work for till you can correct the outer.Did you trash the old housing? mabe you could use that one if you wreck the new one and it's still ok, probbaly not recomended but if it fits tight it might work if installed properly.

Thanks for your help. I will get the bearing greased, align the motor and get it running again.
