Re: Installing a '59 carburator on a '57 engine?
Hi Rolmops,
Will the '59 fit on the '57? Yes. Will it boost performance, no. Should you boost performance of your 35? Not beyond 35hp - when OMC boosted it to 40 for 1960, they ended up recalling all of them so they could put in a heavier crankshaft - they started sheering off right above the top bearing.
That's not to say you can't get more power out of your existing motor. You'd be surprised how many folks try to add power gadgets, open stuff up, shave heads, etc., when all they really needed was new rings and a honing. All along their motor wasn't even putting out its rated horsepower due to other issues. At the very least a good internal cleaning with Sea Foam, a clean up of any burrs on the prop and lower unit, a check that the prop is allowing the motor to reach rated revs, etc. can all help boost power without a lot of investment. Many of the older motors have carbon build-up issues (vintage oils didn't burn NEARLY as clean as the newer ones do) and if the Sea Foam doesn't get it out, a tear down and cleaning might be in order. I had one motor that had fairly good compression, but wouldn't get up and boogie - come to find out the exhaust ports were virtually closed off with carbon! I scraped it all out and it made a huge difference!
I'm getting off track and rambling... sorry...
- Scott
