Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

msalloum,
I'd take Steve and Rodbolt's advice.
Remember by his own admission, Vinney only wrenches on big HPDI's and his clients have more money than brains, so it doesn't matter if he screws up the crank or thrust bearings. I'm sure the HPDI loves the big hammer servicing too
Probably never seen a 3.0LX in his shop, the "Big Boys" only play with 300+ hp

Ive used the hammer but its much easier to heat the center hub of the balancer and freeze the crank snout with 134a and the balancer slides right on.You can hammer it but this is a better safer way to do it.In my younger years on my 327 I drilled and tapped the crank.Good Luck.

Block and Hammer. I guess Mercruiser doesn't know what there doing either. Rodbolt I like your bearing/thrust bearing theory. There is still no threads in the crankshaft new or old design. If you read the service manuals its in there. I guess no one reads the books. This thread is perfect example of misinformation Even the so called pro's didn't have a clue. and the others chim in and they hadn't a clue either. The best thing is You can't debate a picture. All the others where there for the ride. All aboard. Chu-chu.

Isn't that just a tiny bit arrogant?

Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

Thanks for all the responses. I've got the balancer back on. Used a tool similiar to the one shown by achris60 and a hammer. Going to run the engine tonight, so hopefully it won't blow up.

Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

yep manuals have been noted to be wrong. I have a merc manual 13 for the GM 4 cyl that shows the tool threaded in the crank and tells ya how to use the pusher nut. I personally have never seen a 2.5/3.0 with a threaded crank. but the list of stuff I havent seen grows everyday.
however I do 6 to 8 timing covers a year due to leaking circ pumps.
I have the correct tool to push the balancer back on.
good luck and remember common sense and a firm understanding of what you have is better than a manual full of typo's.

Yeah Vinney I have done it before, heated up the balancer. I didn't say cook the damn thing, I said warm it to about 200 degrees. Nothing will melt.

Whatever, sorry for trying to help.

Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

Where do you buy a balancer thermometer? I guess you need a heat gun and a stove to install a balancer. The factory instructs the proper method NO mater what you say Rodbolt. You were the one with the big mouth about a big Hammer. Thats why you work for someone and I'm self employed. Come ride on the misinformation train Who's driving it today?

Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

vinney I have owened my own business here for 14 years. I always strive to find a better way. the tool made to push the balancer on is far superior to the hammer method. merc has changed the reccomended procedure several times depending on the service manual used. I am a factory traind GM and Porsche tech and have pulled wrenches for olds as well as chevrolet and volkswagon. I am certified in yamaha, suzuki, force merc volvo-penta and mercrusier, most of my work here is jonny rudes. so I have worked just a bit on machinery. they taught how to push. if you hit the crank snout you bring newtons laws into play which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. the first being if you hit the crank the crank goes aft. the force stopping the rearward motion is the fwd flange of the crank thrust bearing surface. and that is why its a press fit not a hammer fit.
Ill stick by my pusher tool.
good luck and keep posting. but if you refer to the service manual I mentioned you will find it claerly states the crank shft is threaded.
I just said I have never seen a threaded one.

Re: Installing a Harmonic Balancer

Rodbolt Im with you anyone who knows anything about engines knows that a hammer is not a tool to use on the front of a crank. You can easily ruin the thrust bearing.I prefer the heat and freeze slides right on no hammer needed. Dont believe everything you read Vinney plenty of books have been wrong. Damn arrogant people stink,You must work for Dale Jr.
