Installing a New Prop

I really don't need advice as to what pitch/diameter prop to get. My mechanic recommended a 14" diameter/19" Pitch prop for my 1978 Cobalt.

What I need help with is how to install it. I would like to get the prop online to save some money. I have been seeing a lot of props that say that a "hub kit" is required for use with the prop. My mechanic told me I just needed to buy a prop, and make sure that I didn't lose the washer that is installed under the old prop now.

My question is this: Do I need to get a hub kit, or can I just buy a direct replacement prop for what is on the boat now? I am assuming that the out-drive has some type of hub kit installed already. Are these hub kits model specific to the aftermarket props, model specific to the drive, or both?

Re: Installing a New Prop

Props come in two basic styles; those that don't require a hub kit and those that do.

Props that don't require a hub kit are complete one-piece props, probably similar to what you have on your boat now. If you want to change the prop you remove the old one and put on the new one.
Props that do require a hub kit are two-piece props. The hub is assembled to the prop by the installer (you!) and then attached to the boat just like a one-piece prop.

One advantage of a two-piece prop is you can replace a damaged prop without buying a new hub, so replacements are slightly cheaper. You can also buy two differently pitched props to use with the same hub.

You do not need to buy a hub kit if you buy a one-piece prop; this will probably be a direct replacement for what's on your boat now if it has the original prop. The outdrive will not have a hub kit if it has the original prop.
