Installing accessory battery, what gauge wire should I use to fuse block?

Hey guys,

I just bought myself a new fishfinder... I am installing a deep cycle battery for this and other accessories (stereo, interior lights, etc).

This is the fuse block I am going to purchase:

Screw Terminal Blade Fuse Block ATO/ATC 12 Circuit with Ground - Blue Sea Systems 5026 - iboats

I'm curious what gauge wire I should bring to this fuse block from the accessory battery? I know I don't need an extremely low gauge like the primary battery has that goes to the starter, what do you guys think?

Thanks!

Depends on how much current you plan on drawing and the length from the battery to the fuse box. Typical gauges are 10 or 8. Make sure you have a circuit breaker at the battery for the wire that feeds this fuse panel.

I'd go with #10 AWG maximum for the total of those loads that you're talking about. Larger wire sizes require larger crimp terminals, larger crimping tools and often have ring terminal holes that can fit sloppy if the terminal posts aren't as big. Truth be known, a #14 AWG would likely carry all the loads you mentioned, but I'd stay with a #10 in case of future added loads. - Grandad

10 gauge should be fine. The worst that could happen is that you have an extra few tenths of voltage drop that won't affect anything you are probably going to use.

Still need a fuse/breaker at the battery that feeds that wire.

30AMP fine for that?
