Alright guys, not only am I new to this forum but I am new to outboards in general. I have been told I should install a set of boyesen reeds in my Tohatsu 40 2 stroke 3 cyl. I am a college student but I do a lot of engine work over the summers (mainly big diesel cats and volvos for pile driving hammers) so I know a marginal amount about spinning a wrench. Im just wondering what all is involved with installing these things......just want to see whats involved so I can judge whether or not to tackle it myself or spend the money and take it somewhere.......I really would like to do it myself but.....i guess you cant always get what you want...... so if anyone could tell me what all would be involved I would greatly appreciate it....

it is easy .... remove the airbox, then the carbs, then you'll see the reed blocks, just replace, it is really quick and easy .....

I did it to my 2cyl 40C this spring. Not hard, but the change in performance was minor.

Re: Installing Boyesen reeds in 40 hp Tohatsu???

I ran Boyesen dual stage fiber glass reeds in my bikes for years. OEM metal reeds were breaking and getting sucked through the engine. Boyesens' work fine, but after a while the primary reed would take on a flex and cause a rich idle. Which loads the crankcase and causes a bad bog coming off idle. I had to flip them from time to time and ultimately replace them as a routine maintenance item. Not sure if they have improved since then.
I never really noticed a performance change other than the bog when the aged. Your results may vary. :) I still have a new, unused set in my tool box from 1982. :) Don't throw your original reeds out.
